Song #22 to air on the first day of MTV programming was In The Air Tonight, By Phil Collins. It was released as a single from his Face Value Lp, on January 5th, 1981. Face Value was also Collins’s first solo venture apart from his regular band, Genesis. According to urban legend, the song is about a real-life drowning that Collins witnessed, and an onlooker who failed to help the drowning victim. Not so, says Collins, who cites the divorce he was going through when he wrote it, as the song’s actual inspiration.
